Dr. Robert A. Campbell, II, is a board-certified Addiction Psychiatrist with a remarkable 37-year career in medicine. His unique background encompasses extensive experience in both surgery and psychiatry, offering him a distinctive perspective on patient care.

Dr. Campbell began his journey at the University of Florida, earning both his undergraduate and medical degrees in 1985. He then pursued a residency in General Surgery at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, followed by a fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the University of Miami in 1992. After a successful career as a Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Dr. Campbell felt a calling to return to training and completed a residency in Psychiatry at the University of Louisville in 2013.

His passion for addiction treatment led him to serve as Medical Director for the Clinics at The Healing Place in Louisville, KY, and later as faculty at the University of Louisville Department of Psychiatry. He then took on leadership roles at Columbus Springs East in Columbus, OH, serving as Medical Director, Director of Addiction Services, and Director of the Dual Diagnosis Unit. Currently, Dr. Campbell is an Attending Psychiatrist at Twin Valley Behavioral Health, the state forensic hospital in Columbus, OH.

Dr. Campbell’s dedication to education is evident in his clinical faculty positions at the University of Louisville, The Ohio State University, Ohio University, and Wright State University Departments of Psychiatry. He is board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and the American Board of Preventative Medicine in Addiction Medicine. Additionally, he holds fellowships in the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Addiction Medicine.

Dr. Campbell’s diverse experience has shaped his wide-ranging interests, including emergency psychiatric care, chemical dependency, the intersection of mental and physical health, bioethics, and patient safety. He is also deeply invested in addressing stress disorders among medical and mental health professionals and has been recognized for his teaching excellence with the 2017 Psychiatric Residents Association Golden Apple Award.

Throughout his career, Dr. Campbell has actively participated in numerous ethics committees and contributed to crucial initiatives like the Opioid Task Force at the University of Louisville. He remains an active member of various professional organizations, including the American Society of Addiction Psychiatrists, American Association of Emergency Psychiatrists, American Society of Professionals in Public Safety, and the National Patient Safety Foundation.

Dr. Campbell’s unique combination of expertise in surgery and psychiatry, coupled with his unwavering commitment to education and advocacy, positions him as a leading figure in the field of addiction treatment and mental health care.
